Larapinta Trail

Larapinta Trail

The Larapinta Trail is an exciting 223 kilometre bush walking track, starting in Alice Springs and finishing at Mt Sonder, through the West MacDonnell National Park in the heart of Central Australia. The grandeur and timeless beauty of the ranges are the backdrop and setting for the trail, which is divided into twelve sections, providing walkers with an opportunity to experience an ancient landscape.

The trail crosses a variety of terrain, from high exposed ridge lines with spectacular views, to lush sheltered gorges home to many of the arid zone's rare plants. Each section of the trail has its own character and appeal, and different sections are suitable for different levels of experience.

Trekkers can join or leave the trail at a number of points accessible to motor vehicles at regular intervals along its route. In effect, it comprises a series of shorter sections, each a one or two day walk.

There is a water tank provided at each Trailhead and at the main campgrounds. Within each section, spots for camping are identified, but not all have facilities provided. The trail is signposted with direction markers, especially at major track junctions, crossing points and other possible points of confusion.
