Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest Island located 16 km off the coast of South Australia. The retreat is situated on 113 acres of natural bush land and works in harmony with its natural surrounds. Management is committed to the principles of environmental protection and tourism sustainability and as we are operating in one of the most pristine natural environments, we require the assistance of our guests to ensure we preserve this environment for future generations to come. The heart of the retreat is a natural bush courtyard where guests can relax amongst native flora and experience the multitude of bird and other local wildlife. We are a family friendly retreat and ideal for children of all ages.

Accomodation
The retreat consists of 20 courtyard suites and a lodge containing 4 self contained apartments and 8 basic style motel rooms. Reception area containing a small shop with merchandise, snacks and fuel. Daniel Radcliffe was a guest of KI Wilderness Retreat while he was filming the movie December Boys. Michael Caton was also a guest in 2010, and Dr Harry release a kangaroo back into the wilderness. Kangaroo Island Wilderness Retreat offers a variety of accommodation to suit both the budget traveller and those seeking the comforts of a boutique style hotel. We welcome large groups and families, who we happily accommodate for through interconnecting suites. Self-catering options are also available with apartment accommodation.
Dning
Nicolas Baudin’s Restaurant and Bar is a boutique dining experience utilizing the best local and South Australian produce. The bar serves various styles of local cuisines and the alacarte menu starts at 6pm. The aim is to provide a selection of dining experiences for house guests and locals, including bbqs and more. The restaurant is open breakfast and dinner daily. While we don’t open for lunch we offer, bbq packs to take on your day out or cook in the bbq area at the retreat, and a picnic pack to take with you on your day of touring the island. At KI Wilderness Retreat it is important to support the local community, which is why we stock a fantastic range of Kangaroo Island wines. The wines, sold by the glass gives our guests the opportunity to sample a number of local wines to compliment their meal.
Experience
Kangaroo Island is located 16kmoff the coast of South Australia. It is brimming with more wildlife than any other location in the country and is a natural wilderness in its purest sense. Access to Kangaroo Island is easily achieved via a 45minute ferry trip departing from Cape Jervis, south of Adelaide or a 25minute flight from Adelaide. Bookings for both ferry and flight are essential to guarantee availability. Kangaroo Island Wilderness retreat is only 1.5 – 2 hours drive from the Sealink ferry terminal or 1 hours drive from the Kingscote airport. All roads are sealed to the retreat, although take care driving at dawn or dusk or after dark due to the wildlife. Follow the signs to Flinders Chase and we are located 700m before the national park entrance. We recommend arriving on the island during the day and taking your time to explore the coast along the south on your way to the retreat, to arrive before dark. Self Drive touring – We recommend self-driving as the most affordable and convenient way to experience Kangaroo Island and its many attractions. The majority of the islands attractions are accessible in a 2WD on sealed and unsealed roads. The retreat is the ideal location for exploring the western part of the island, at the gateway to Flinders Chase National Park, home to Remarkable Rocks (voted number 6 best view in Australia) and Admirals Arch (colony of New Zealand fur seals). Kangaroo Island has a mild island climate and is perfect to visit all year round, each season producing a unique experience. Autumn – March to May – pastures begin to green and waterways begin to flow, a time of transition providing wildlife with fresh growth to feed on. Max temperature 22°C min temp 12°C and average rainfall 40mm. Winter – June to August – spectacular lush green countryside with flowing rivers and abundant wildlife. The young start to emerge from pouches and the Southern Right Whales cruise along the coastline. Max temperature 16°C min temp 7°C and average rainfall 55mm. Spring – September to November – season of rebirth. Wonderful time to see the spectacular array of wildflowers , birds and animals that all put on a show. Max temperature 21°C min temp 10°C and average rainfall 35mm. Summer – December to February – Conditions are dry and warm, with a contrast of summer pastures and summer wildflowers and the earth becomes sun bleached. Wildlife tends to shelter in the heat of the day. Max temperature 27°C min temp 15°C and average rainfall 20mm.
