Motomachi District

Motomachi offers a uniquely delightful cityscape infused with foreign and Japanese culture.

Hakodate was one of the first ports in Japan to open its doors to foreign trade, some 150 years ago. Motomachi was the first area really to flourish back then, acquiring a Western-influenced streetscape which remains to this day. With sloping streets offering views of the port and stylish western buildings such as foreign churches and old consulate buildings to be seen, a leisurely stroll around the area is definitely in order. Motomachi, with its picturesque movie-set appearance, offers the perfect backdrop for a photo opportunity.

Officially, the road from the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward that leads you toward the Hachiman-Zaka Slope and various churches is called Minatogaoka Street. It’s better known, however, as "Soft Serve Ice Cream Street" because of the endless line of shops selling soft serve ice cream made from delectable Hokkaido milk. Be sure to stop in for a break during your walk. With unique ice cream flavors such as Hokkaido melon and squid ink on the menu, you will be hard pressed to make a decision!

The historical buildings in the Motomachi area are lit up at night so visitors can also enjoy an evening stroll. Iconic buildings such as the churches, the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward and the Old British Consulate are illuminated from sundown to 22:00, creating a beautiful setting of glowing light for each building. In winter (December to February), the trees lining the sloping streets are strung with lights as part of an event known as the "Hakodate Illumination," which creates a really romantic vibe.
