Ayers Historic House

Step back in time to colonial Adelaide when you visit Ayers House Museum. Ayers House is the last of the grand mansions of Adelaide’s North Terrace boulevard, and one of the few examples of a historic home of one of Adelaide's prominent families. Visitors can explore the museum by guided tour, and learn about the social history of the period and life for Ayers House occupants both "above and below" stairs.

The interiors of the house have been fully restored, and during your visit you can learn about the restoration process and stencilled finishes on the walls and ceilings. Ayers House Museum also contains a significant collection of antique furniture, decorative arts, silver, paintings and costume.

The museum explores all three levels of the grand mansion including:Ground Floor: the State Dining Room, Family Dining Room, Small Drawing Room, House Keeper’s Sitting Room, Butler’s Pantry, Servery, and Kitchen.Lower Ground / Basement: Main Cellar, Wine cellars, and underground Summer Sitting Room.First Floor: Guest Accommodation/Bedroom Wing.

There are also two permanent exhibitions on display: The Life of Sir Henry Ayers, a display of personal effects belonging to Sir Henry Ayers, on loan to the National Trust from the Ayers family; and Little Adults: An interpretation of Victorian Childhood. Both exhibitions can be viewed by visitors as part of the guided tour.
