Destination Overview

Southeast Asia has many undiscovered treasures.

One such treasure is the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia. With its white sandy beaches, rolling hills and stunning natural beauty, Lombok is the perfect holiday destination for those looking for an escape from their tedious lives. So, what awaits you if you do choose to go on a holiday in Lombok? Read on to find out.

Like a scene right out of a painting, Mawun Beach can only be described by one word, stunning.  Most tourists have not heard of this secluded beach, with its powdery white sand and amazing turquoise water; yet! As a result, the beach is very clean and mostly deserted. The rolling hills, which serve as a backdrop to this gem, add to the overall appeal of Mawun beach. Another secluded beach in Lombok is the Selong Belanak Beach. Selong Belanak is a bit more crowded than Mawun thanks to the presence of a few cafes and a villa. It is still just as clean and is often described as "a surfer's heaven". Pink Beach is more of the same but is much harder to get to as the roads are not in the best of conditions. What you can do on these beaches is sit back, relax and let go off all your troubles. If you prefer a more crowded environment then Kuta beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island. While the view is magnificent and the water clean, the beach is dirty. The same can be said about the Senggigi Beach.

There are three small islands or "Gilis" just off the coast of mainland Lombok. These are- Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. While not as developed as the rest of Lombok, the Gilis do have bungalows and cafes available for tourists on a holiday in Lombok. The island is surrounded by clean, crystal clear water. The currents are not that strong in certain parts of the islands, making it suitable for anyone wanting to learn or hone their diving snorkeling skills. Dive underwater and take a swim with Lombok's amazing aquatic life. All safety measures are taken, especially for novices. Gili Air is the most advanced of all of the Gilis and has resorts, such as the Manta Dive Gili Air, which ensure a pleasant and learning experience for tourists.

There are numerous waterfalls dotted throughout Lombok. The ones that are must-see during your holiday in Lombok are the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfall, and the Sindang Gila Waterfall. Getting to the waterfalls involves a bit of hiking but nothing too tiring. Besides, the waterfalls with their pure, sweet-tasting water are completely worth the trip. The waterfalls are splendid as is Mount Rinjani, Indonesia's second largest volcano. The landscape surround Mount Rinjai is breathtaking; the climb to the top of the volcano, one you will never forget. The view from the top is simply phenomenal. If you like monkeys, then you can go up close and personal with the mischievous little devils if you choose to go trekking through the Pusuk Monkey Forest. Mind your belongings!

Despite being a predominantly Muslim country, Lombok, in particular, has a diverse culture. As a result, you will find temples littered throughout Lombok. One of Lombok's oldest Hindu temples is the Pura Meru. Another Hindu temple with similarly spectacular ancient architecture is the Pura Lingsar. Lombok is also home to a Chinese Buddhist temple, the Po Hwa Kong, which was built in 1806. Stepping into these temples will be like taking a spiritual journey back in time while on your holiday in Lombok. You can also pay a visit to the many Sasak villages on the island. The Sasak are the indigenous people of Lombok and form about 85 percent of the population. The Sasak are known for their unique culture and traditions, many of which remain and fascinate tourists to this day.

When the name of an island loosely translates to "chili", you can make an educated guess on how spicy the food will be on Lombok. The local Sasak cuisine is not as well-known as Balinese or Padang cuisine, but that does not mean the Sasak cuisine is any less delicious. Granted Lombok's local food might be a little too strong for the palates of most foreign travelers, but it can prove to be quite an enjoyable challenge for the more adventurous tourists. Lombok's most famous specialty is the Ayam Taliwang, which is dish comprising of a freshly barbecued chicken marinated in dried chili, lemon juice, onion and garlic and covered with a sweet, sour and spicy sambal sauce. Ayam Taliwang can be found anywhere on the island, such is its popularity. Fish is another local favorite. Fish skewers can be found in many roadside restaurants. These restaurants tend to be cheaper but have a more vibrant vibe to them. The food is yummy as well. For those looking for a more 5-star experience, there are many upscale restaurants which serve the Saska cuisine along with many foreign cuisines such as Italian and Indian. The food here also tends to be less spicy to make them more suitable for internationals. All in all, you will find something for everyone while on a holiday in Lombok.

When it comes to its nightlife, Lombok takes full advantage of its luscious beaches. You will find many bars along the beaches which cater to customers all night long. There is a different kind of pleasure in sitting on the beach at night and sipping delicious drinks. You will also find your fair share of nightclubs on the island. All this and more will make your nights during your holiday in Lombok all the more memorable.

Lombok

As is the norm in places in this region, Lombok has a typical tropical climate.

It has two distinct seasons: The dry season and the wet season. It is hot and humid in Lombok throughout the year. Lombok has a drier climate than neighboring Bali, but tropical storms are not anything out of the ordinary. It also gets really windy in Lombok so you really do need to hold on to your hats. When should you visit Lombok then?

October marks the start of the rainy season. The average rainfall in October is 109mm with temperatures ranging from 31°C to a minimum of 22°C. While average temperature remains the same, there is an increase in rainfall to 219mm in the months of November and December. Humidity gets to a high of 81 percent before the wet season comes to an end at the beginning of April of the following year.

The dry season in Lombok is balmier than the wet season. Rainfall in April falls to a low of 92mm while temperature remains in the mid20s. 9hrs of sunlight is expected during the months of July and August, with humidity falling to 70 percent. The best time to visit Lombok is during the dry season. The pleasant weather, along with fewer chances of rain ensures your holiday in Lombok can go on without a hitch. Keep in mind though that the dry season is the peak season and so tickets will be pricier. All worth it for completely enjoying this island reminiscent of heaven.
