Home to one of the most unique occurrences in the world, the Kawah Ijen volcano and crater lake are not to be missed. Within Ijen National Park you will find Kawah Ijen volcano which is known for producing large amounts of sulfuric gases. If you visit at night, you’ll be stunned to see the volcano glowing bright blue. As the sulfuric gases mix with the air, they create sulfur dioxide which turns blue at high temperatures
Commonly misconstrued as blue lava, this reaction is breathtaking. After the sulfur has cooled, it’s collected by local miners who sell it to support their families. Nearby, is the Kawah Ijen crater lake which sparkles turquoise in the sunlight. The bright yellow sulfur deposits against the blue of the water create a colorfully pleasing landscape. If you choose to make the two hour hike up to the volcano's summit, we will organise a guide for you. Gas masks must be worn when climbing as the sulfur in the air can be poisonous. Surrounding this area are coffee plantations which grow their crops in the fertile soil created by years of active volcanoes.
